Electromagnetic Mania
Via inquiry, discover how electromagnets work and what can be done to enhance their effectiveness. Also discover applications of electromagnetic knowledge. All investigations are hands and we will manipulate a virtual electromagnet. In addition to process skills being covered, TEKS 4.6B and 4.6C will be investigated. This session is designed for grades 4 and 5.

Exploring Air
Students explore properties of a common gas mixture – air. They experience air as matter and discover that it takes up space and can be compressed and that compressed air can move objects around. They construct and compare parachutes and balloon rockets that use air while answering the following questions:
What can air do? How does a parachute use air? What happens when air is pushed into a smaller space? How can water be used to show that air takes up space? How can compressed air be used to make a balloon rocket?

Sink students into Learning with Wood and Water
Young learners observe how wood and water interact, and then find ways to sink wood samples. They use relative-position words to describe the location of wood in water as they discover that some woods sink easier than others. Students make a bar graph of their results from the investigation. Electricity Goes Round and Round
Electricity Goes Round and Round
Students explore series and parallel circuits and compare the functioning of the components in each circuit. They formulate and justify their predictions, based on their observations of electricity transferring energy to produce light and motion. D-cells and solar cells are used as energy sources. Students also learn about alternative energy sources while answering the following questions:
How can you get two bulbs to light at the same time?
How can you light two bulbs brightly with one D-cell?
Which design is better for manufacturing long strings of lights—series or parallel?
How can you make a motor run faster using solar cells?
