The Elephant in Your Classroom
The elephant of misconceptions is never absent from school. Help identify and process through the misconceptions in your classroom. We'll focus on the big question of, "What is living and non-living?" We will use Page Keeley probes, Quality Questioning strategies (such as affinity mapping), as well strategies to support all learners, ESL and SPED included. Find out how pre-assessments can help drive instruction and reflection to eradicate the elephant.

Have you ever wondered why workshops provide materials for activities that cost a lot of money and take a huge amount of time to set up before each class period? So have I and time is of the essence. During this workshop, you will be provided with four science activities from the 6th grade curriculum. The focus will be on life science, with a little Earth and Space thrown in. These activities will provide you with hands-on materials to share with your colleagues and concise instructions ready for class on Monday.

Ruling the Roost with Chicken Activities
Exploring the use of chicken legs/wings you will understand the structure and function of joints. You will be dissecting raw chicken legs/wings to find the cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. This activity will highlight the interactive functions of joint structures. Finally, this session will culminate with the building of a joint model to take home with you.

Crazy chromosomes
Participants will use a model to investigate the relationship between DNA, gene, and chromosomes. This exciting new activity ties the concept of inheritance of traits to the processes of meiosis, gamete formation and fertilization. Participants will build a set of chromosomes, model gamete formation and fertilization and then build the resulting offspring.
Equipment raffle and free resources provided.

Crazy TRAITS:Genetics and Adaptations
Participants will experience a unique model for how genetic traits are passed on to offspring. Concepts such as traits, alleles, phenotypes, genotypes and heredity will come alive as you create crazy creatures. Participants will also play the game of Adaptations. Free resources and door prizes.

Authentic Collaborative Planning
Think fast! On a scale of 1-10 rank your team’s collaborative planning strategy! If your immediate thought is, “Ugh!” or “What collaborative planning?” then this workshop is for you. Join two of Wakeland High School’s biology teachers to learn how their weekly team planning meetings are fun, helpful, truly a team effort, and most important effective. ALL students ultimately benefit from what each team member brings to the table during collaborative planning.
We will present tips and ideas about collaborative planning while modeling our favorite student-centered activities.
